Simple tests for septic bursitis: comparative study.

چکیده
Differentiating septic from non-septic bursitis of the olecranon and prepatellar bursae is a common and important problem. Though septic cases may be identified clinically, laboratory tests have also been used. 2 However these tests are either not widely available or inadequately sensitive. We assessed two new tests that can be performed by most clinical laboratories: estimation of cell counts in a sample of EDTA anticoagulated bursal fluid and inoculation of the fluid into liquid media.

Septic olecranon and prepatellar bursitis in hockey players: a report of three cases.
Septic bursitis (SB) is an important differential diagnosis in athletes presenting with an acute subcutaneous swelling of the elbow or knee. Prompt recognition is essential to minimize recovery time and prevent the spread of infection. Due to the significant overlap in clinical features, it is often difficult to differentiate SB from non-septic bursitis (NSB) without bursal aspirate analysis. S...
متن کاملCommon Superficial Bursitis.
Superficial bursitis most often occurs in the olecranon and prepatellar bursae. Less common locations are the superficial infrapatellar and subcutaneous (superficial) calcaneal bursae. Chronic microtrauma (e.g., kneeling on the prepatellar bursa) is the most common cause of superficial bursitis. Other causes include acute trauma/hemorrhage, inflammatory disorders such as gout or rheumatoid arth...
متن کاملSeptic and non-septic olecranon bursitis in the accident and emergency department--an approach to management.
Olecranon bursitis is relatively common. One third of episodes are septic. Most of the remainder are non-septic, with occasional rheumatological causes. Trauma can cause both septic and non-septic olecranon bursitis. Clinical features are helpful in separating septic from non-septic olecranon bursitis, but there may be local erythema in both. Aspiration should be carried out in all cases, and i...
متن کاملTherapy-resistant septic olecranon bursitis due to Mycobacterium gordonae
INTRODUCTION Septic olecranon bursitis due to atypical mycobacteria is rare. An insidious beginning can delay diagnosis and treatment. Antibacterial therapy recommendations are not well-defined for bursitis caused by atypical mycobacteria. We present a rare case of olecranon bursitis caused by Mycobacterium gordonae, reporting our experiences regarding pathogen identification and antibiotic the...
متن کاملPrepatellar Bursitis Secondary to Sepsis in the Neonatal Period
Bursitis, inflammation of small synovial fluid-filled pads, can be septic or nonseptic. Cases of bursitis are usually reported in adults, and to the best our knowledge, there is no report of bursitis in the neonatal period. In this report, we present the case of a newborn with prepatellar bursitis secondary to Staphylococcus aureus sepsis. Septic prepatellar bursitis is a rare infection in chil...
